Back to school season is just around the corner and concerns are creeping in for parents. However, with preparation, you can take out the worry or at least lessen it. Yes, it is true we are going back to school and yes, we are still facing the pandemic. COVID 19 is not over yet, however this is not the end. It is a new year, a new beginning and the enthusiasm is high.
Head of states would like to have students back in classes ready and healthy to learn with a new placed system and parents are advocating for their children. Some of the schools may have a conventional delivery with school every weekday, with class sizes that reflect current regulations, with regular social interaction and extra-curricular activities. Other schools may have a different system placed for their students. Three weekdays in school and two online classes, smaller size class setting etc. Whatever the case is; if you are prepared you will be okay.
Here is a list of things that may help you prepare for school this year during the pandemic.
Mental Preparation
What does it mean to be mentally ready? It means to prepare your mind for any situation at home and at school. It is important for you to learn to manage your worries and give your mind time to reset. Talk to an adult if you start to feel sad, lonely, anxious, or angry.
Organization
This may not seem like a fun activity, but it is an essential life skill. Learn to organize your schedule in and outside of school. If possible, invest in a whiteboard or an agenda to track assignments, homework, online sessions, and teachers’ and emergency phone numbers or emails. This can be all paperless and coordinated online.
Rescue Old Materials
This is an awesome challenge for everyone going back to school this September. Help your parents save some dollars by going around the house and digging out pens, pencils and other materials from the drawers, cupboards, and bags rather than buying new ones. You can reuse your bag from last year, this way you are saving money and saving the earth. Remember to always sanitize your materials before and after use at school.
Social Distancing
Who would not want to hug their friends whom we have not seen in almost a year? Not this year! Though, there is a better and safer way to do this. Practice at home for the child to visualize what six feet of distance (two meters) looks like and give an air hug! Also, when in need of a connection you are welcome to get a hug from a loved one with whom you live.
Do Not Share
I know that since kindergarten we have been taught that sharing is caring; however, at this moment, we are recommended NOT to share. Bring your own food, drinks, and your own materials; this way you will not require to borrow from someone else or share.
Staying Healthy
It’s important to drink plenty of water and eat healthy foods by packing your own lunch and healthy snacks from home, ask mom/dad to get you a reusable water bottle (keep up) to help you stay hydrated and safe. Remember to be patient – it is a life skill that really pays off. Stay healthy by eating right and exercise. This can be a family time activity.
Staying Clean
Practice washing your hands for 20 seconds frequently because it will only help reduce the spread of viruses and germs. Carry a hand sanitizer in your bag, even though the schools will provide this. Wear a mask that covers both your nose and mouth when needed to stop the circulation of the virus.
Self-care
I know it is not as easy as it sounds but talking to someone about how you feel or what you are experiencing is part of staying mentally healthy. Self-care includes getting a good night’s sleep; for most 6 – 8 hours a night is the right amount. When things are tough then write, talk about, or draw a picture of how you feel and get in touch with your friends over the phone or email.
